Philosophy

Fourteen years ago, Laura Clark, the owner of The Outfitter at Harpers Ferry, quit her job after 14 years working as a CPA and Financial Analyst, and along with her husband Ron Clark, opened a small hiking store in Harpers Ferry. Something was wrong with the way I was living.  The resources I was using both with my personal energy and from the actual work I was doing just didn’t seem to be making a difference.  The scenario is similar to excess carbon usage.  I was cranking numbers, but to no avail, and using more resources than were being given back.  Life was not any better because of the resources I was using.  There was a need on the trail for supplies and services.  So, in 1996, I opened a small trail store in Harpers Ferry.  I was now serving customers who actually lived needed very little:  just what they could carry out of the store.  Over the past 14 years we have expanded from one small store to three retail stores including the new bike shop operated by Ron (http://threepointscycle.com/).

 Shopping for price only on-line?  You have come to the right place.  We are located about half way on the Appalachian Trail, and all of our hard core hiking customers are unemployed for at least 6 months to hike the 2, 175 mile trail.  They need products that are a great value.  Not only is price the main reason they all shop here, but we offer the best value in gear.  The gear we carry has to hold up, and make it the next 1,000 plus miles to Maine or Georgia.  So when you shop here, not only do we offer the best prices we can possibly offer, we off the best value in gear.

 Selection

 One thing you find out hiking with everything on your back is that you don’t need a lot of excess junk.  Our selection is very carefully planned months before each season.  We are a 14 year old company, and over the years many of our first Appalachian Trail customers have gone on to do the Triple Crown, (i.e.  The Appalachian Trail, The Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail).  These are the top hikers from around the world.  They have been our best advisors over the years, and we pass on this information to you via the best selection with no needless junk to lug around.
